School Open Day and Chinese Culture Day

National treasure panda arrives at St. Monica’s Kindergarten

  • Our kindergarten will arrange various parent-child activities related to Chinese culture on 21-6-2024 “School Open Day and Chinese Culture Day – National Treasure Pandas Visit St. Monica’s Kindergarten “, for example, to cultivate children’s appreciation of Chinese traditional culture.

Theme Events – Lunar New Year

Objective(s)

  • Understand the customs of the Lunar New Year
  • Learn about the celebrations of the Lunar New Year
  • Learn about the etiquette of New Year greetings

Brief Descriptions:

During the theme activities, teachers introduced New Year customs and celebrations to the children, and worked with the children to decorate the classroom into a New Year’s Eve market. During free play, the children could play different roles and participate in a simulated visit to the New Year’s Eve market. Some children would also go to the family corner to pay New Year’s greetings and say congratulations to each other. In addition, children will perform lion dance during the physical fitness period. Through different activities, children can experience the customs and celebrations of the Lunar New Year and deepen their understanding of traditional Chinese festivals.

Theme activity: making glutinous rice balls

Objective(s)

  • Understand the manufacturing method of glutinous rice balls
  • Explore the ratio of flour to water when kneading dough
  • Know the meaning of glutinous rice balls

Brief Descriptions:

The teacher first invited the children to share their experience of eating glutinous rice balls, and then explained the meaning of glutinous rice balls and introduced the types and production methods of glutinous rice balls. The children first try to add glutinous rice flour and water to knead it into dough. After successfully kneading the dough, they wrap the fillings to make glutinous rice balls. After completion, the teacher will help cook it and everyone will share it during tea time. The children shared their experience of making glutinous rice balls with their teachers and enjoyed their finished products. They all looked successful and satisfied.

Brief Descriptions:

The teacher first discussed with the children how to make dumplings. The children studied the material criteria and the steps and procedures one by one. Afterwards, they made the dumplings themselves, and the teacher helped them cook them. During tea time, everyone shared the dumplings. The children told the teacher that they had successfully made delicious dumplings and shared the process with their families. They also looked forward to having the opportunity to make dumplings with their families.

Brief Descriptions:

The teacher first discussed with the children how to make buns. The children studied the material criteria and steps one by one. Afterwards, they made the buns by themselves, and the teacher helped them steam and cook them. During tea time, everyone shared the buns with each other. The children told the teacher that they had successfully made delicious buns and shared the process with their families. They hoped to have the opportunity to make buns with their families.

Brief Descriptions:

Our school introduces the production and performance of shadow puppetry to children, allowing them to learn about traditional Chinese folk art. The students were interested and curious about the shadow play stories. In addition, under the guidance of the instructor, the children tried to manipulate shadow puppet tools, perform storytelling, and learn about this unique traditional art.

Outdoor Learning Day – Ocean Park Nature Experience Class

Objective(s)

  • Allow children to learn outdoors and strengthen their ability to observe carefully

Brief Descriptions:

K1 – Land and Sea Exploration Team, allowing children to visit “Ocean Wonders” and “Asian Animal World”, explore the characteristics of marine and land animals, and through careful observation, understand the needs of different animals and the relationship between their habitats

K2/K3 – Panda Trail: Let children learn about China’s national treasure “Giant Panda”, observe the living environment and habitat of giant pandas, and enhance children’s awareness of protecting endangered animals

Brief Descriptions:

Each student was given a “daffodil head” and a “dwarf pink” to take home and plant (with instructions on how to cut a “daffodil head” for parents’ reference) to add to the festive atmosphere of the Lunar New Year.

Brief Descriptions:

As the Lunar New Year is approaching, children and teachers have a “reunion dinner” together. Parents are asked to prepare their favorite dishes for the children and bring them back to school to share with teachers and children on the day. This allows children to feel the joyful atmosphere of the Lunar New Year and also You can introduce food to each other to improve their language expression skills.

Traditional Chinese Costumes

Brief Descriptions:

The teacher briefly introduces that wearing traditional Chinese clothes is one of the Chinese cultures. In addition, children are invited to try wearing traditional Chinese clothes back to school to share with each other.

Chinese Cultural Activities – Mandarin Biweekly

Objective(s)

  • Provide meaningful learning goals so that children can feel that Mandarin can be used in daily life
  • Make learning more fun

Brief Descriptions:

Children who have a simple Mandarin conversation with their teacher between December 16 and December 20, 2024, will receive a “sticker” from the teacher to be put on their record card.

If the record card is full of “stickers”, the teacher will reissue a new record card and continue with simple conversations until the “Mandarin Biweekly” activity is over.

  • Initial Understanding of Chinese Culinary Culture – Chinese Foods and Cooking Methods, Chinese Tea Art
  • Fostering a Sense of Identity and Belonging to China in Young Children.
  • Brief Descriptions:Helping young children recognize and differentiate between Chinese and Western foods, Chinese cooking methods (steaming, frying), and types of Chinese tea. Enjoying these during snack time and bringing back these foods and drinks to share with family at home.

    Brief Descriptions:

    K3 learnt about Chinese culture through guided tours, interactive games, touching replicas of historical artifacts, and listening to historical stories, to gain an understanding of Chinese culture.

Brief Descriptions:

All the children and parents of the school had a Mid-Autumn Festival reunion dinner, played lanterns, guessed lantern riddles and performed dwarf dance.
